24% Less Skin Ageing With Daily Sunscreen
If you’re looking for a way to protect your skin from the signs of ageing, it’s as simple as sunscreen.
Research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine 2013 indicated that people who use sunscreen daily showed 24% less skin ageing compared to those who don’t apply SPF every day.
It’s easier to remember sunscreen if you’re on holiday or out in the summer sunshine. However, not everyone applies the same discipline year round.
The thinking goes that if you’re indoors more – at work for example – your skin is not receiving as much exposure to the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays.
This is true, but it takes very little radiation to further the skin’s ageing process. So even a few minutes at lunch time or between meetings exposes the skin to the sun. If the skin is not protected even for these shorter periods, then the skin is vulnerable to sun damage. UVA is absorbed by fibroblasts in the skin which stimulates breakdown of collagen in the skin. This in turn means loss of volume leading to wrinkles, creases, crevices and looser skin. Sun exposure can also cause patchy complexion or pigmentation problems and deterioration in skin texture – both of which are very ageing.
What if it’s cloudy or raining? SPF still has a role to play. UVA and UVB may be lower, but can still come through – and of course the weather could break – leaving unprotected skin susceptible to damage from sun exposure.
Not wanting to look prematurely aged is a good reason for wearing SPF sunscreen every day of the year. Building a good habit of protecting the skin has been proven to be beneficial in terms of how the skin ages.
However, there is of course another benefit from wearing SPF and that is preventing the sun from causing damage that could trigger skin cancer. This is a very serious matter as skin cancer affects increasing numbers of people – often years after the damage was done.
The message is clear – it is really important to protect the skin from UV damage.
