Check Moles for Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May is the annual ‘Skin Cancer Awareness Month’, organised by the American Skin Cancer Foundation, with the objective of raising awarenesss an understanding of how to prevent, detect and treat skin cancer.

  • Preventing skin cancer: 90% of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with sun exposure and could be prevented with better sun protection/avoidance
  • Detecting skin cancer: 1 in 5 Americans can expect to develop skin cancer at some point, so vigilance is more important than ever and everyone is encouraged to self-check and be aware of the signs
  • Treating skin cancer: skin cancer is highly treatable if it is tackled early, but left untreated it can spread quickly and even be fatal

The American Academy of Dermatology SPOT Skin Cancer™ campaign specifically promotes self-checking among men, who are a group considered less likely to be checking for melanoma.
