Mirror: Health Benefits of the Sun

The Mirror article on the multiple health benefits of the sun included expert input from Dr Ross Perry.

The feature entitled “13 reasons why spending time in the sunshine is good for your health” gives 13 ways in which the sun can be beneficial for health including some surprising insights from scientific research from around the world:

  1. Natural sunlight improves energy and mood, so it’s easier to wake in the morning
  2. Your skin can benefit from some sun. Dr Ross Perry says

“In some people sun exposure can improve skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. Just be careful not to overdo it and never risk burning.”

  3. Sunlight boosts serotonin production, making you feel more positive
  4. Fertility is improved
  5. Good vitamin D levels are linked to lower body fat
  6. Sun exposure reduces blood pressure and therefore risk of heart disease and stroke
  7. Higher levels of vitamin D are linked to lower risk of dementia
  8. Vitamin D has been shown to have anti-cancer properties
  9. Testosterone peaks in August, boosting libido
  10. Vitamin D together with calcium is linked to bone health
  11. Active women who spent time in the sun had longer life expectancy
  12. Sunny weather eases muscle discomfort and helps relaxation
  13. Reduced risk of gum disease

The last word, however, goes to Dr Ross Perry, who reinforces the need to be careful with regard to sun exposure.

He says

“Exposure of arms and legs two or three times a week for 15-20 minutes is enough to produce adequate vitamin D.”
