Mole Clinic on ITV This Morning

with Dr Ross Perry

Cosmedics Skin Clinics’ founder Dr Ross Perry appeared on ITV’s This Morning today with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield in their feature on worrying moles, melanoma and skin cancer.

Ross joined resident doctor, Dr Chris Steele, who has himself had skin cancer three times and understands the risks of sun exposure.

Popular presenter Holly Willoughby introduced the feature saying:

“According to latest figures over 15,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year, with the number of skin cancer cases on the rise.”

Phillip Schofield added:

“Well, the good news is the earlier you detect it, the better chance you have of surviving it.”

Dr Chris Steele explained the change that could indicate that a mole is suspicious:

  • Size – growth (e.g. noticeable over 4 weeks) or an unusually large size (bigger than the blunt end of a pencil)
  • Colour – changing colour or variation of colour within the mole – this could include diverse shades and tones including light to dark brown, red, black, blue…
  • Itchiness – or bleeding, scabbing or oozing

Dr Ross Perry explained that there are no special skills required in checking and monitoring moles, saying:

“You don’t need to be a mole expert…”

Continuing:

“What you’re looking for is the funny mole or the that’s just different from all the others.

It’s change that’s the most important thing.

Sensible Sun Advice

To conclude the feature, Phillip gave vital tips about sun exposure:

  • Cover up (with clothing/hats/sunglasses etc)
  • Use the right sunscreen (SPF 30+)
  • Get the timing right (don’t stay too long in the sun)
  • Avoid the hottest part of the day

Dr Chris Steele closed the feature by stressing the need to take sun exposure seriously:

“Covering up of course is the best way to prevent radiation – I mean it’s radiation – you think of sunlight, but it’s radiation, ultraviolet radiation.

“I’ve had skin cancer 3 times – I’m very aware of sunlight.”
