Raconteur in The Times looked at the myths surrounding skin cancer with expert advice from Dr Ross Perry on some of the more common misconceptions.
The introduction to the article explained the importance of properly understanding skin cancer:
“With something as life-threatening as skin cancer, widespread misconceptions and knowledge gaps must be quashed to keep people safe in the sun”
Myth 4 –
“‘I don’t have moles so don’t need to worry”
This is one of the more dangerous myths as it can lead to complacency and neglect.
The myth is based on an element of fact as the article explained that having moles is a known risk factor for skin cancer
“Having moles on your skin can quadruple your risk of developing the deadliest type of skin cancer, according to a study presented at the World Congress on Cancers of the Skin in Edinburgh.”
However, not having moles does not mean that you are not at risk.

“Seventy per cent of all melanomas are new moles, so it’s important to keep checking even if you don’t have any moles, as new ones can always develop.”
