The Dangers of Sunburn Art
With a heatwave forecast for this week, there are plenty of warnings about the dangers of sun exposure, yet an emerging trend on social media could undo all the good work for those who choose to try Sunburn Art.
The concept is to intentionally create quirky suntan marks on the body by using high factor sun cream or stencils so that certain areas don’t burn, leaving other areas completely exposed to the sun so that they ‘tan’ faster, which most often appears to result in bright red skin.
Yet experts warn that the complete lack of sun protection is highly dangerous, leaving the skin exposed to the maximum UVA and UVB rays.
Skin cancer is already one of the most common cancers. There are more than 100,000 new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer every year in the UK.
It is one of the most virulent and potentially deadly once established, yet is also one of the most preventable through simply avoiding overexposure to the sun.
Experts say that the sun should never be underestimated.
