What Causes Cysts?
Are you wondering what causes cysts?
If you have one, then you may well wish to know what has caused it to develop.
Most cysts are most commonly caused by either blockages of some sort, to pores, sebaceous glands or ducts. They can also develop as a result of infection, or around foreign bodies, such as earrings.
When formed, a cyst is a little like a blister. It is a closed capsule or sac-like structure, typically filled with liquid, semisolid or gaseous material.
A cyst is not a normal part of the skin tissue where it is located. It has a distinct membrane and outer division known as the cyst wall. If the sac is filled with a more liquid type of pus, it may be an abscess.
Cysts can vary in size from a small ‘pimple’ size to a large fist size which can displace the skin and even internal organs. They may start small but get bigger and more noticeable with time.
They are not usually painful, but can be uncomfortable where they protrude. This may mean they get in the way of clothing or everyday activities such as shaving. They can also be embarrassing cosmetically, so people are worried about the way they look.
Most cysts are benign although any concerns should always be raised with your GP as soon as possible.
Cyst Removal Treatment
Common sebaceous cysts may not be approved for removal on the NHS, because a ‘benign’ growth is likely to be classed as a cosmetic issue. It is not medically harmful or cancerous, just an unpleasant lump.
However, if you have a cyst, there’s no need to just put up with it. Private cyst removal is available with organisations such as Skin Surgery Laser Clinic who have a selection of clinics based in London and Bristol.
