Shave Excision Surgery
Shave excisions are the easiest and commonest form of mole removal for moles that protrude from the skin. It is performed using a special surgical instrument known as a Dermablade which is used to plane down the mole or lesion. The skin is prepared using a tiny painless injection of local anaesthetic to numb the area, making the procedure painless.
Advantages of Shave Excision Surgery
- Quick and simple
- No stitches required
- Takes 7-10 days to heal
- Minimal scarring – leaves a tiny mark
Other Information
- Skin Surgery Laser Clinic only offer this procedure for patients over 18
- Moles that are flat, potentially worrying or cysts might be better treated using ellipse excision surgery
Ellipse Excision Surgery
Moles that are not suitable for shave excisions or laser treatments require ellipse excision. These might be larger moles, flat or potentially worrying/suspicious. The technique is also used for cysts.
Ellipse excision involves cutting out the entire mole using a scalpel to remove it completely, including any part of it that it below the skin’s surface. The wound is closed using stitches which usually dissolve.
Advantages of Shave Excision Surgery
- Complete removal of the lesion
- Made entirely pain-free with the use of local anaesthetic
- Dissolvable stitches
- Takes 7-10 days to heal
- Suitable for moles or cysts
Other Information
- Skin Surgery Laser Clinic only offer this procedure for patients over 18
- After the initial wound heals, the result is a tiny line of scar tissue instead of the mole which gradually fades from red to white
Freezing/Cryotherapy
Freezing (medically known as cryotherapy) is the use of intense cold to treat warts and skin tags by freezing the skin cells to destroy the tissue.
The freezing treatment normally involves 5-10 seconds of the liquid spray being applied with a break of 1-2 minutes inbetween treatment cycles. Patients describe the sensation as a slight burning sensation, but this is very short-lived and stops when treatment ends.
Advantages of Cryotherapy (Freezing)
- Quick and simple
- Low cost treatment compared to surgery
- No stitches required
- Minimal scarring – leaves a tiny mark after healing
Other Information
- Skin Surgery Laser Clinic only offer this procedure for patients over 18
- The duration and number of treatment cycles depend on the skin type and the nature of the problem
- It is quite usual for the skin to blister afterwards for a few days then go red. Most of the wounds would have healed in under a week.
- Stubborn warts or skin tags might also be a candidate for laser treatment or surgery
Please note, the most appropriate procedure is advised by the doctor during face to face consultation. This ensures that your skin lesion is properly diagnosed and medical history is also considered.
