Winter Does Not Stop Skin Cancer
When it’s cold, damp and wet outside; it can be hard to really take the threat of the sun seriously.
We barely see the sun in winter and certainly don’t tend to feel its warmth on our skin.
However, the American Academy of Dermatology say that even on cloudy days, up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate the skin.
Yes, we may be further away from the sun. Yes, the sun’s rays are weaker in winter. Yes, we’re out in the sun for less time during winter months.
However, the sun can still damage the skin, and with rising numbers of skin cancer, it makes sense to take precautions.
Mole cancer experts recommend wearing a suitable high protection sunscreen every day all year round to protect the skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays.
Skin Checks
The winter is also a great time for checking the skin for any suspicious signs. Skin is paler and freckles will have faded, so it’s easier to see any changes and identify any worrying concerns.
Earliest treatment is recommended for the best results, so anybody concerned about a mole or blemish is advised to see a GP as soon as possible.
Most will turn out to be benign (harmless) and in these cases will not be removed by the NHS. However, many patients prefer to have their moles removed for peace of mind. Private mole removal clinics offer fast service without waiting lists.
