Recurring Warts – Why They Keep Coming Back

Many people suffer from warts and often find them stubborn and difficult to eradicate.

So once treated, why do so many warts keep coming back again and again?

The problem is that the virus which causes warts is a particularly persistent one and quite hard to eradicate. With time, a wart tends to become bigger and deeper. It can also become more numerous as the virus gets spread to other area. So treating the wart can feel like an uphill battle.

The first port of call for treatment tends to be using an over the counter remedy from a pharmacist. When warts are young and small, this can be effective. However, for the more established warts, this can often not be strong enough for a complete and total banishment of the wart(s). They may either show no signs of improvement, or else (perhaps more frustratingly) look better for a while only to come back with a vengeance.

Treatment for recurring warts

If you’ve already tried the chemists’ remedies at home to no avail, it may simply be that the wart is too resistant. There is a limit to the strength of chemical or freezing agent that can be sold for use by the general public.

The next step would be to see a doctor for a professional wart removal treatment by a qualified medical professional.

Risk of recurrence

Even with professional treatments, patients are warned about the risk of the wart coming back.

However, these are stronger treatments than available over the counter and have a much higher chance of success.

Doctors may either warn the patient that a course of freezing/cryotherapy or laser may be required – or else in the case of very stubborn and resistant warts, surgery is always available as a last resort.

Wart treatment options

  1. Freezing/Cryotherapy
    • Doctors at our professional skin clinics are able to offer a more aggressive freezing treatment than the DIY kits
    • This will penetrate the skin more deeply and is suitable for larger/tougher warts
    • 2-3 sessions may be required for full results
  2. Laser
    • For more resistant warts or verrucas, doctors can user laser treatment
    • This is designed to penetrate the skin and destroy the virus, allowing healthy skin to regrow
  3. Surgery
    • In extremely stubborn cases, wart removal surgery may be the last resort
    • This would remove the area affected by the wart virus, allowing new skin to grow
