Is it Dangerous to Damage a Mole?

It can be quite worrying to accidentally damage a mole – as we’re all now a lot more aware of the connection between moles and skin cancer.

In most cases, there will be nothing to worry about if you scrape the skin or knock the top off a raised mole. However, it is very sensible to be cautious and careful.

A normal mole is simply a pigmented benign growth in the skin; so knocking the top off it is no different to scraping your skin anywhere else on your face or body.  The skin will heal up and unless the scrape was very deep, the mole is most likely to return to its previous appearance.

Sometimes it is an injury which makes you look a bit closer at a mole. As with all moles, what you need to be vigilant for is any abnormal symptoms, such as:

  • Asymmetry: an uneven shape
  • Border: a poorly defined border, jagged, blurry or indistinct
  • Colour: a mole with variations in color throughout, or else abnormal colors like white or red
  • Diameter: unusually large moles – over 6mm across – are more of a cause for concern
  • Evolving: the size, shape or behaviour of your mole is changing

Sometimes the biggest concern is that the mole is simply ‘different’ from the rest – the ‘ugly duckling’ sign.

If there are any concerns at all about a mole – whether this relates to an injury or not – it is important to seek attention, starting with a visit to the GP, who will either put your mind at rest or refer you for attention if they share your concerns. Melanoma can be treated and the earlier this starts, the better the outcomes.
